A multi is where most punters' money goes on NRL weekends, and where most of it stays with the bookie. My four-leg derby multi above pays $5.07 at my prices, so $20 returns $101.31. Below is what that price means as a real chance, how much a bookie's margin takes off it, and how I decide when to stop adding legs.
Multiply the price of every leg. My four legs are Dolphins $1.27, Broncos $1.85, Roosters $1.54, Panthers $1.40. Their product is $5.07.
Each of my prices is 1 divided by the chance I give that side, so the chance of the whole multi is those chances multiplied together: about 20%, or roughly one time in 5. The multi price and the chance are the same fact written two ways.
| Leg | Derby | My price | My chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphins v Broncos | Brisbane derby | $1.27 | 79% |
| Broncos v Cowboys | Queensland derby | $1.85 | 54% |
| Roosters v Rabbitohs | 1908 foundation clubs | $1.54 | 65% |
| Panthers v Eels | Western Sydney derby | $1.40 | 71% |
A bookie's price on a side is usually a little shorter than the side's real chance is worth. That gap is its margin. In a single bet you pay it once; in a multi you pay it on every leg, and the gaps multiply.
| Legs | Multi pays, if each leg is 5% under my price | Multi pays, if each leg is 8% under |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5% less | 8% less |
| 2 | 9.8% less | 15.4% less |
| 3 | 14.3% less | 22.1% less |
| 4 | 18.5% less | 28.4% less |
| 5 | 22.6% less | 34.1% less |
| 6 | 26.5% less | 39.4% less |
The 5% and 8% columns are examples, not any bookie's actual margin. The shape is the point: by the sixth leg you are giving away a quarter or more of the fair payout before a ball is kicked.
A two- or three-leg multi keeps the margin cost under about 15% on the 5% example, and each leg is still one I've looked at properly. Past four legs, I find I'm adding sides to make the number bigger rather than because the price is right.
My rule is simple. A leg goes in only if the bookie's price is at least my price. If I have the Roosters at $1.54 and the bookie offers $1.45, that leg makes the whole multi worse, however likely the Roosters are to win.
A multi is only as good as the price you get on each leg, and that price is set by the bookie, not by me. Compare how six licensed bookies handle deposits and withdrawals before you choose where to build it.

Four favourites at $1.40 each make a $3.84 multi. It feels safe because every leg is likely to win. On those prices each leg lands about 71% of the time, and all four together about 26% of the time: roughly three times out of four, one of them lets you down.
That doesn't make a favourites' multi a bad bet. It makes it a $3.84 bet with a one-in-four chance, which is exactly what the price says. It becomes a bad bet when the bookie's legs are shorter than they should be.
A normal multi takes one leg per game. When you want two results from the same match, such as a winner and a try scorer, bookies sell it as a same game multi, priced differently because the legs depend on each other. The mechanics are in same game multi explained.
Tap any price on the derby cards and the slip at the top rebuilds the multi at my numbers, with the $20 return. Swap the Brisbane derby from the Dolphins to the Broncos and watch how far one long leg moves the total. For any other pairing, the calculator on NRL tips gives my price for both sides.

What I did for this page: priced six NRL derbies from my ratings as at 27 September 2026 and worked out every multi figure from those prices (checked 29 September 2026). Not done yet: no bookie prices on these derbies, because none are scheduled until the 2027 draw.
