GUIDE · THE RACES
Horse wagering explained: tote v fixed odds, place terms and how exotic dividends are pooled
Horse wagering in Australia comes in two forms: the tote, where your dividend is a share of a pool, and fixed odds, where the price is locked when you bet. This guide covers both, plus win, place and each-way, how many places pay in each field size, and how quinellas, exactas, trifectas and first fours pay. A $10 each-way bet costs $20, and the Melbourne Cup runs on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Below, compare bookies before the Spring Carnival.
This is a footy site, but come October the races take over, and racing bets don't work like footy bets. This is the guide I'd want before Cup week.
Tote or fixed odds: where your dividend comes from
With the tote, your bet goes into a pool with everyone else's on the same race and bet type. After the race, TAB takes a fixed commission out of the pool and splits the rest among the winning bets. The odds you see beforehand are approximate dividends, and they can move until the race is run.
With fixed odds, the bookie sets a price and you take it. TAB's help page says a fixed-odds price is set when the bet is placed and won't change, subject to scratchings and dead heats. You know your price before the gates open.
TAB shows both side by side on its racing pages, a tote column and a fixed column. The same runner can pay differently on each: one number comes from a pool, the other from a bookie.
| Tote | Fixed odds | |
|---|---|---|
| When your price is set | After the race, from the pool | When you place the bet |
| What decides it | How much was bet on each runner, after commission | The bookie's price, margin included |
| Your runner is scratched | Bet refunded | Final field: refunded in full (TAB, Victoria). Futures: all in, no refund |
| What I use it for | Exotics, which are pool bets at TAB | Win and place bets when I like the price now |
TAB's tote now pays one dividend Australia-wide, but fixed-odds prices are set by each bookie, so the same runner can carry a different price at each one.

What happens when a horse is scratched
On the tote, TAB refunds bets on a scratched runner. For bets placed online, the refund lands in your account after final dividends for that race are paid.
Fixed odds split in two. TAB's refund page, in its Victorian section, says a fixed-odds bet on the final field is refunded in full if your runner is scratched. A futures bet, taken before the field is set, is "all in": there's no refund if your horse doesn't run.
A late scratching can also change a fixed-odds return. TAB's fixed price holds "subject to scratchings", and TAB publishes a schedule of deductions by price range, from 80 cents in the dollar in the shortest range to nothing above $51.
Win, place and each-way
A win bet pays if your runner finishes first. A place bet pays if it finishes first, second or third, though third only pays in bigger fields. TAB says it plainly: a place bet gives you a better chance of collecting than a win bet, for a smaller return.
Each-way is two bets of the same size, one to win and one to place. At TAB you enter a stake in both the Win and Place fields, in either the fixed or the tote column. So $10 each-way costs $20 in total.
If your runner wins, you collect both the win and the place dividend. If it runs second or third, you collect the place dividend only. Here's how $10 each-way plays out with a $6.00 win price and a $2.00 place price, both round examples.
| Result | Win bet | Place bet | Back from $20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wins | $60.00 | $20.00 | $80.00 |
| Second or third | $0.00 | $20.00 | $20.00 |
| Unplaced | $0.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 |
At these prices, a placing only gets your $20 back. That's why I only go each-way on longer-priced runners, where the place dividend is worth more than breaking even.
How many places pay: field size
The number of place dividends depends on how many horses start. These are TAB's place rules.
| Starters | Places paid |
|---|---|
| 8 or more | 1st, 2nd and 3rd |
| 5 to 7 | 1st and 2nd only (no third dividend, shown as NTD) |
| 4 or fewer | Place bets refunded |
Late scratchings don't take a place away. If 8 or more runners are left at final scratching time and later scratchings cut the field to between 5 and 7, TAB still pays three place dividends.
The Melbourne Cup's conditions set a safety limit of 24 horses, with final acceptances closing at 4:30 pm AEDT on Saturday 31 October 2026. From then on, you're betting on the final field.
How tote dividends are pooled
The tote is a sharing sum. Every bet on one race and bet type goes into the pool, TAB takes its commission, and what's left is divided among the winning bets. When lots of people back the winner, the pool is shared more ways and the dividend is smaller.
A round example: a $100,000 win pool, with $15,000 of it on the winner. TAB's win commission is 14.50%, so $14,500 comes out and $85,500 is left. Divided by $15,000, that's a $5.70 dividend for every $1 bet, stake included.
From 22 September 2026, TAB's NSW, Victorian and Queensland pools can combine into one National Tote, with one dividend for every Australian customer. TAB expects all domestic meetings on it by early October. Its commission rates, the same across those pools, are:
| Bet type | TAB commission |
|---|---|
| Place | 14.25% |
| Win | 14.50% |
| Duet | 14.50% |
| Quinella | 17.50% |
| Exacta | 20% |
| Quaddie | 20.50% |
| Trifecta | 21.50% |
| First Four | 23% |
| Big 6 | 25% |
TAB's minimum dividend is now $1.04 in every state and territory it serves, so a winning tote bet returns at least $1.04 for each $1. The quinella, exacta, trifecta and first four pools keep more for TAB than the win pool does, which is worth knowing before you box a big trifecta.
Exotics: quinella, exacta, trifecta and first four
Exotics ask you to name more than one runner in the same race. At TAB they're tote bets, so each pays from its own pool, with the commission above taken out first.
| Bet | What you pick | Order matters |
|---|---|---|
| Quinella | The first two | No |
| Exacta | The first two | Yes |
| Duet | Two of the first three | No |
| Trifecta | The first three | Yes |
| First Four | The first four | Yes |
Boxing covers every order of the runners you pick, and the cost climbs fast. On TAB's figures, a $1 boxed trifecta costs $6 with 3 runners, $24 with 4, $60 with 5 and $120 with 6.
Flexi betting lets you set the total instead. Box 5 runners in a trifecta for $15 rather than $60, and you hold 25% of the bet. If the trifecta pays $200, you collect 25% of it, or $50. TAB's minimum flexi bet is 50 cents, and your percentage must be at least 1%.
A quaddie asks for the winners of four races at one meeting, usually races 5 to 8. After commission, its pool is divided among the winning $1 units, so the dividend depends on how many people found all four.
The 2026 Spring Racing Carnival
Melbourne's spring carnival runs from early October into November. These are the 2026 dates Racing Victoria and the VRC list. Every day below is at Flemington except the Caulfield Cup. That includes the Cox Plate, which the Moonee Valley Racing Club runs at Flemington this year.
| Date | Race day | Course |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday 3 October 2026 | Turnbull Stakes Day | Flemington |
| Saturday 17 October 2026 | Caulfield Cup, 2400 m | Caulfield |
| Saturday 24 October 2026 | Cox Plate, 2040 m | Flemington |
| Saturday 31 October 2026 | Victoria Derby Day | Flemington |
| Tuesday 3 November 2026 | Melbourne Cup, 3200 m | Flemington |
| Thursday 5 November 2026 | Oaks Day | Flemington |
| Saturday 7 November 2026 | Champions Stakes Day | Flemington |
The VRC lists Cup Day's first race at 10:45 am Melbourne time, which is AEDT: daylight saving starts on Sunday 4 October. Queensland doesn't observe it, so that's 9:45 am in Brisbane.
If you take a Cup price weeks out, remember the all-in rule: at TAB, a futures bet isn't refunded if your horse misses the race. Once the final field is set on 31 October, a scratching means a full refund on a TAB fixed-odds bet.
Tote or fixed odds: what I'd use
If I like a price now, I take fixed odds, because I know what I'm getting and a crowded pool can't shrink it later. For exotics I use the tote, since at TAB that's where quinellas, trifectas and first fours live.
On Cup Day I pick two or three races I've actually looked at and leave the rest. The maths from the odds guide still applies: a price is a chance, and the margin or the commission comes out first.
If you like combining bets, the same game multi guide explains why linked legs pay less, and TAB prices its same race multi on the same principle.
Set a deposit limit before Cup week, not during it. If you'd like a break, BetStop blocks you from every licensed Australian online and phone gambling provider, and registering takes about 5 minutes. Gambling Help Online is on 1800 858 858, and more support is on the responsible gambling page.
